skip to main content area sjss logo liaccc #liaccc home what’s on choirs venues applications london international a cappella choral competition sunday 25 june – saturday 1 july 2017 you are warmly invited to the third london international a cappella choral competition, in association with peter phillips and the tallis scholars. we are delighted to announce the 16 choirs, from 11 countries around the world, who will be competing in this year's competition. please explore these pages, where you will find full details of the groups, alongside event listings. many of the supplementary events during the liaccc week are free of charge; we encourage choirs and audience alike to become fully immersed in this celebration of global choral tradition. divider conceived in 2013 by peter phillips, the london international a cappella choral competition was founded in april 2014 in conjunction with st john's smith square. peter had long dreamed of bringing together vocal groups from around the world to hear each other sing competitively; learn from each other’s strengths and weaknesses; and possibly even win! there is no other competition like it in the uk, with a purely a cappella focus, that aims to simultaneously nurture and challenge choirs. choral tradition is strong across the globe, and has been a constant in london for much of the last five centuries. liaccc strives to demonstrate the excellence of this historic music-making to an international audience, in the fantastic surroundings of st john’s smith square, a baroque architectural masterpiece in the heart of westminster. as such, both old and new music are important features of the competition. in previous competitions we have showcased the music of john tavener and gabriel jackson, but in 2017 we feature the life and work of arvo pärt. links with renaissance polyphony can be heard in all these composers’ work which only works to strengthen this very special musical tradition. during the week, each of the sixteen choirs will compete in one public heat, performing a twenty minute programme, in front of an expert panel of judges comprising peter phillips (chairman), graham ross, ghislaine morgan, tõnu kaljuste, and carolyn sampson. repertoire will include arvo pärt, renaissance polyphony, and music of each group’s own choice. in addition, the competing ensembles are offered the opportunity to perform a lunchtime concert in a central london venue, and to participate in a specialist workshop with esteemed vocal coach, ghislaine morgan. following each heat, a winner will be announced, and each winner will progress to the final. the four finalists will compete for the coveted winning spot in the grand final on saturday evening. liaccc 2017 at a glance sunday 25 june 7.30pm opening concert monday 26 june 7.30pm heat 1 tuesday 27 june 7.30pm heat 2 wednesday 28 june 7.30pm heat 3 thursday 29 june 7.30pm heat 4 friday 30 june 7.30pm in concert: the tallis scholars, directed by peter phillips saturday 1 july 7.30pm the grand final lunchtime recitals 1.10pm monday – friday choir workshop s 10.00am monday – friday additional events including a film screening and photography exhibition booking for all ticketed events will be via st john’s smith square box office . tel: +44 (0) 20 7222 2168 | email: [email protected] | press & pr enquiries: [email protected] address: st john’s smith square, london sw1p 3ha © 2015 st john’s smith square | registered charity number: 1045390 patron hrh the duchess of cornwall
